Zaini Abdul Wahab

Mr. Zaini Abdul Wahab is an energy management system consultant and trainer with over 25 years of experience in energy efficiency(EE) and sustainable energy development industry who specialises in reducing business operational costs for organisations through energy management system implementation. He obtained his bachelor’s degree (Hons.) in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Malaysia in and a Master’s Degree in Energy Management from UNITEN. In 2014, he was certified as an expert in Energy Management System (EnMS) by United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and certified as a ISO50001 Lead Auditor by Intertek in 2023.

He is also Registered Electrical Energy Manager (REEM) with Energy Commission, a certified energy auditor and an accredited energy measurement and verification professional by Malaysia Association of Energy Service Companies (MAESCO) and a certified trainer by the HRDF(now HRD Corp.).

Since 1997, Mr. Zaini has been an active practitioner in energy efficiency (EE) industry in Malaysia and held various energy related positions in local and multinational companies and in the government sector. He started his career as an energy consulting engineer before embarking into integrated facilities management services to strengthen his hands-on experiences by applying his EE knowledge in the daily operation and maintenance activities.

He joined the Energy Commission in 2004 and then became the head of Demand Side Management Unit to spearhead the EE programmes by the government. He was attached at the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water in 2010 to lead the project team to implement EE initiatives under the Economic Transformation Programme and assigned to assist the ministry in the National EE Master Plan Study. Then Mr. Zaini moved to SEDA Malaysia in 2011 as the Director of EE. His tenure in the government sector has exposed and connected him with key personnel in agencies and organisations related to energy sector such as IEA, UNDP, UNEP and in countries such as Japan, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore.

In 2012, Mr. Zaini re-joined the private sector to continue his passion the EE industry by providing consultancy services using his vast knowledge and experiences. At present, his services include energy management consulting as a registered electrical energy manager for

over 30 installations, energy cost reduction through the adoption of energy management system based on ISO50001, studies for sustainable energy management related policies with strategic roadmap development, implementation and reporting. He also provides training and capacity development programme design and delivery to develop and implement effective energy management programme.

In the local scene Mr. Zaini has been actively promoting EE practices for organisations and public. He is an elected Committee Member in MAESCO since 2012 and former Vice President of Malaysian Association of REEMs. As a trainer,he has trained hundreds of executives, managers and directors through various training programmes since 1999 and has been regularly invited to events locally and internationally to present papers in EE topics. Mr. Zaini has also been engaged by certification bodies as a technical auditor for ISO50001 certification and surveillance audits since 2012. Mr. Zaini is also a registered consultant with Asian Development Bank from 2012 and was one of the judges for Asean Energy Award in 2011. He is also a committee member in the drafting of the EE and Conservation Act for Malaysia by the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change.

Mr. Zaini has been invited regularly to talk at forums, conferences and awareness programmes locally and also internationally on topics related to energy efficiency. He is also columnist in a Green Plus Magazine where he writes on EE topics and actively participating in online media and social media platforms through sharing EE related articles and other materials to promote EE to wider audience. Mr. Zaini had also been invited as an expert to share his views on energy efficiency issues in the printed media and TV and radio stations.

Using his in-dept knowledge and hands-on experiences in delivering consultancy works and training services for government and private sectors, now he provides energy management consultancy, advisory, training and REEM services to reduce business operating costs for organisations through sustainable energy management system approach with the energy management consulting firm Green Pacer Sdn Bhd which he founded in 2018.
